Seahorse World

Great time sharing with Launceston Central Rotary clubThis week's Rotary Club of Central Launceston meeting was Rotary's version of a Sir David Attenborough nature lesson and we absolutely loved it!

Craig Hawkins from Seahorse World was our Guest Speaker and he gave us some amazing insights into seahorses.

Did you know male seahorses actually have the babies? Yes they do!

And the lady seahorses are wild about the male pot-bellied seahorses! Respect the pot belly people!!

Seahorse World has won silver in the Tasmanian Tourism Awards in 2016 and 2017 and Craig gave us an incredible insight into how he and his wife have developed the business over the past 16 years.

Seahorse World is now the first private company worldwide to breed the spotted handfish, which is a high value species.
This is significant as there are only 1000 of these fish remaining.

Seahorse World is breeding five species of seahorse in 2018 as well as peppermint shrimp and clownfish.

Thanks Craig for a fabulous talk, we loved having you at our meeting.

Rotarian Phil Sykes took this terrific photo of RCCL Chairman Malcolm Waterston (pictured left) and Craig Hawkins.

Seahorse World

Really looking forward to hosting Tamar Discovery again this year, in partnership with NRM North on June 16th. Hugely successful 2 years ago, it is an event where locals and visitors can come and hear some top line science speakers covering subjects relevant to our river.
Did you know for example that the Tamar river has one of the rarest marine habitats in the world? Come and learn about our special river. Discounted entry to Seahorse World to people who participate. See attachment for more details.

Minister for Environment formally announces Spotted Handfish breeding program at Seahorse World.

It was our pleasure to welcome the Minister for the Environment Elise Archer yesterday to formally announce the Spotted Handfish Recovery project and breeding program. As Dr Tim Lynch from the CSIRO said - this is our Thylacine of the sea but at this stage we still have a chance to save them. Seahorse World currently has the only hatched offspring of the Spotted Handfish anywhere, but the plan is to hopefully breed thousands of them in the future and return them to the wild.

Come along and see the babies, some of which are now on display for the public.

Seahorse World

Our Seahorse Farm is 20 years old today!! It began on this day in 1998. Rachelle Hawkins the first biologist employed is still here overseeing a range of our breeding programs including our work with the spotted handfish recovery team. Back in those days it was discovered that many people were interested to see what we were doing so Seahorse World opened in late 2000 and many people today are still getting great joy delving into the mysteries of seahorses. #tamarvalley ...
